Things You Must Know If You Are Building A Home In A Historic Neighborhood

Building a house in a historic place means more than architecture. It means being part of the past and preserving it at its best. That’s why building a house in a historic place is vastly different than building one in any regular neighborhood. Here are 3 things that you absolutely must remember when planning your dream house in a historic place.

1.   You should be concerned with the design aspects

When you build a home in any regular neighborhood, you just need to understand the weather and design of your preference. But when you are building a home with a historical significance you have other design aspects to consider too.

  1. Orientation – The orientation of the home should be toward the road, i. e. your building should face the street as most buildings in historic places do so.
  2. Scale – The scale of your building should be well proportioned to the main attraction. This includes everything from windows, doors to roof.
  3. Height – Make sure the height of your walls and design elements are not overshadowing the main attraction and are well proportioned.  
  4. Rhythm – The spaces and the repetition in design elements should be in the rhythm of the historic landscape.
  5. Materials – The materials you use for the construction of your building should somewhat resonate with the vibe of the historic place.
  6. Roof shapes – The shape of the roof should give out the vide of the historic place your neighborhood is known for. For example, if the historic landscape has domes, you can put small domes to your building to respect and resonate with the actual place of attraction.
  7. Overall Landscape – When you design your place, take notice of the historic place’s design, its trees, plants, walls, etc. Using those landscape ideas, you can design yours so your building becomes a part of the past and bears some resemblance.

2.   Submit your design for approval

When you are trying to build your house near a historic place, you will need some permission. Mostly this permission will be regarding the design. So, when you finish the design considering the aspects I mentioned earlier, you need to submit it for approval. It might take some time but it is absolutely necessary.

Only after getting this approval, you can start the construction. A side note, it will help if you get the design made by a reputed architecture who has some influence and knowledge on this type of situation.

3.   There’s more waiting even after the design approval

Even after the approval of the design, you might need to wait a bit longer. The reason is, planning a neighborhood with historical attraction takes a lot longer. After the design approval, you might need to go through the zoning process. So, be patient and go through all the protocols. Even if you are just renovating an old place, you will need proper permissions so that you don’t have to face any penalties in the future. Overall, just make sure you are not disrespecting or overshadowing the historic place with your plans and you’ll be fine.
