Must-Have Core Principles For Web Designers

No matter what profession or line of work you are in, the work principles are the core that keeps you on the right track. Here are some of the principles that every web designer must have in order to understand the workflow and the secret of web designing –

1.   Purpose is foundation

This is true for any creative process. Whatever you are trying to create, a painting, a slogan for a company, an ad or a website, you need to understand the purpose of the whole thing. Once you understand the purpose behind designing the website, picking elements for the website and drafting a layout will be easy.

2.   Be more user-friendly than industry-friendly

The website you are working on should be more user-friendly than industry-friendly. When you are choosing the content to put on the website, think if it will go through the users or not. Yes, it is important that your website design is relevant to the industry. But what’s more important than industry-relevancy? – the user-relevancy.

This includes choosing the proper words and right design elements. For example, if you are explaining a tough terminology for the users, use soft words that the general audience will understand, instead of trying to impress the fellow industry people.

3.   Typography can impact perception

I have talked about typography and their impacts a number of times. Whether you realize or not, you are practicing the impact of typography all the time. For example – see how the line “Typography can impact perception” is bolded and highlighted above. What does that tell you? It tells you that the line is actually more important than the rest of the text following it and rightfully so.

Similarly, you can use different fonts and typography shapes to convey different emotions in elements like words. The same text can be used to heavily overpower all the other text on a webpage using the right typography. At the same time, that exact same phrase can complement the existing text – all you’ll need is just a bit of alteration in the shape, size and appearance. Like any other creative person, web designers should realize how heavy of impact typography has on the elements of a webpage.

4.   Different visual elements can keep the audience connected to the website

Have you watched those Vogue videos where a guy from Vogue asks 73 questions to a celebrity? Naturally, anyone would think 73 question passes the limit of attention. But if you ever watched a video from them, you know that you cannot resist listening to the entire conversation. One might ask how can content like question and answer keep audiences intrigued for all 73 questions. Well, if you are a good observer, you know the secret is camera movement and different item on the focus. Similar to this, when you are laying out a big lengthy portion that you fear people might skip being bored by the content, you can use different visual cues to keep them engaged. This can be anything from a sudden shift of color to an animation. But make sure they are not distracting the reader since it will defeat the whole purpose.
